Can you believe that Christmas is just around the corner?! Thanksgiving is in a few weeks and if you’re like me, after Thanksgiving, it seems like you blink and Christmas is here. This is also the time to be thinking about Christmas cards. We have Christmas sessions at Firefly happening December 7 and 8th which is perfect timing to get Christmas cards sent to loved ones by Christmas day. Maybe you’re an early planner, maybe you procrastinate a little so I decided to ask the professionals when it comes to all things printing and design, Tanya Pederson with Design Pro. If you are a follower of the podcast I co-host, you may know her as “Tip Tanya.” Well, she’s full of tips in this guest blog post. Let’s dive in!

How far in advance do you need to order cards?
Christmas cards should go out 2-3 weeks before Christmas day.  The first full week of December is usually the perfect time to send out cards to avoid sending them out too early or too late. The turnaround time for printing is 5-7 business days (business days do not include weekends or holidays).  Of course, it can be done faster, but that is our average turnaround time.  I would allow at least a few days for the design process.

What is the design process like? I mean, if someone wants you to do Christmas cards, what do you need from them?
Most couples or families like to include a photo or photos on their Christmas cards, so that is generally the starting point.  The client will email some photos for me to play around with, and then I put together one or two designs based on any information they give me (preferred color scheme, phrase or saying to include, etc.).

How many pictures should you put on a card?
A lot of clients like the simplicity of just one photo.  If you like more of the collage look, I would say 3-5 photos is a good amount.

Do you suggest front and back designs or just front?
That is really up to the client and their preference.  Single-sided printing is cheaper than double-sided printing, so that might make the decision for some people.  I, personally, like the look of double-sided cards.  I think a pattern, design, or even some more photos on the back is a nice touch.  You can even add a message on the back updating your friends and family on some major events that happened over the past year.

Any other information you see a lot of?
I’ve done some in the past and have been working with a lot of wedding couples this year on combination save the dates and Christmas cards.  This is a fun way to notify your loved ones of your wedding date and to send out Christmas greetings at the same time.
