The holidays are always a great time to surprise mom and dad, or any loved one for that matter, with a photo session. Sure, you would expect me, as a photographer, to say this. However, pictures are so important. They preserve a moment in time and add value to your lives as you print those images. Especially households with kids, it’s been proven that pictures of you with your kids make your kids feel valued in the home and build self-confidence. I had the opportunity of working with Austin and Jennifer last year and during the holidays, they purchased a gift card for Jen’s family. The day was here to capture those images and of course, it had to rain. This year has been pretty rough in regards to rain and at this point, it’s not just the farmers hating it, it’s pretty much everyone. It’s messing with any outdoor plans and for me, it’s creating a very difficult situation with planning pictures. In fact, as I sit inside this Starbucks writing this blog a severe storm is going through and the 2:00 daylight has now turned into night. Street lights are on, it’s raining heavily and the wind is blowing quite hard. Back to the family pictures, we rescheduled because of the rain and because of a hospital appointment, our rescheduled date was the last day we could do for a few months. The day of the rescheduled session, no rain, clear skies, and the temperature was perfect. Wouldn’t you know, the second I get excited about the weather, a rainstorm brews. Fortunately, everyone had the ability to change their schedule and do the session two hours earlier. It’s not often we can do pictures at 4:00 in the summer with people facing the West and get decent pictures. Usually, this is because the light is pretty harsh at this time. Fortunately, not when a storm has formed. It was pretty dark, but it wasn’t raining… yet. We started the session and about 30(ish) minutes in, it starts to sprinkle. Fortunately, we were able to get all the pictures in and loaded up in our vehicles just as it started to pour. While rain can be quite annoying for pictures, it’s stories like this that make me love my job. Every session is different and every challenge creates an interesting story to be told. Part of my mission statement with my photography business is to create conversation and inspiration through images. Now, when friends and family come over and see these pictures on the walls, the story of how this session went down will be the topic of discussion and THAT is what I love about photography.
