Every year, at least during some part of the year I have tried doing a 365 project where I take a picture everyday for 365 days. Doesn’t seem too difficult, especially when our phones have the ability to capture and edit. But I can’t just snap a quick shot just for the sake of taking a picture. A picture needs to have meaning, a story, and/or art. So setting this up is not a quick process, at least not for me. So I decided that doing a weekly image might be more easily accomplished.
For the introductory week of this new style of post, I decided to go with something nature provided us (finally); snow. Last night we finally received a measurable amount of snow since Thanksgiving. I drove around town searching for a location that would capture the snow as it was falling as well as a nice scene. I didn’t want to use any flashes or LEDs, I wanted only street lights. As I made my way out, though, the snow stopped falling. So rather than trying to capture the falling snow, I wanted an ally with untouched snow. Altamont is pretty small, so finding an ally is nearly impossible, so I went behind my studio for the first shot. It looked cool with the line of street lights, but there were just too many distractions (wires, a/c units, etc).
I thought the park would be great. There were some lights there and a handful of bridges. I found one that I wanted to shoot and as I parked I looked behind me and in between two large evergreens, there was a street light, an American flag and a bridge with untouched snow. AND while the snow wasn’t falling it was blowing off of the trees and it created a scene of falling snow. I set up the tripod, and took a few images ranging from fast exposures to long exposures. The long exposures were best in terms of lighting but the flag was way to blurry. So after a few shots (and some frozen fingers), I finished with this. It was a fun picture to take, I like dealing with the elements, but I was definitely ready to be in a warm house afterward.
